Eskom probing cause of Medupi explosion

An investigation into the cause of the blast at Eskom’s Medupi power station is underway.

The explosion caused extensive damage, impacting two units.

Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said the explosion was caused by a mixture of hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and air on Sunday night just before 11 pm.

Eskom is not able to quantify the extent of the damage, the cost, nor the price or time it will take to repair presently but will consult with insurance assessors.

The power utility said the preliminary investigation showed the explosion is likely to be an accident.
