MDC’s MP Joana Mamombe detained at a prison for a mental exam by govt doctors

MDC’s MP Joana Mamombe detained at a prison for a mental exam by govt doctors. Joana Mamombe, who failed to attend trial citing mental instability two weeks ago, appeared before Harare Magistrate Bianca Makwande this Thursday for a determination of a state application for her to be admitted at a government mental health facility.

MDC Alliance politician Joanna Mamombe has been admitted at the Harare Remand Prison under the care of the prison Superintendent for two weeks, pending medical examination by two doctors.

The opposition politician’s lawyers were opposed to her admission at the institution, citing that she was recovering from mental illness.

However, Regional Magistrate Bianca Makwande ruled in favour of the State, instructing that the legislator be placed under the care of the Superintendent of Harare Remand prison for two weeks effective this Thursday and that she should be examined by two doctors who must give independent reports.

The ruling was delivered on the basis that Mamombe has to be examined if she is indeed mentally unstable so that the court can decide whether she can stand trial or not.

Mamombe is jointly charged with Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova for publicising false statements and faking abduction.
