The presumption of innocence until proven guilty is just not good enough, according to one ANC veteran. Mavuso Msimang said ANC members implicated in corruption must step aside from their positions.
“The National Executive of the ANC took a very far-reaching decision about a month ago that anybody implicated in corruption to step down or step aside,” the anti-apartheid stalwart said.
“They should approach the Integrity Commission of the organization and discuss their cases with them.”
“The whole thing here is that there are two sets of issues, the first one being the impact of such accusations, such association, [of] corruption on the ANC. For the sake of the ANC, you want to step aside and say “I am innocent and I will defend myself in court but in the meantime, I am moving myself away from the ANC” so the ANC is not seen as an accomplice.”
“What has happened is that a number of people facing serious allegations of corruption it seems as if the ANC was just shrugging its shoulders and thinking, “well, you know, until they appear in court there is nothing wrong”.
“There is everything wrong with a person who is alleged to have done wrongdoing, to a point that criminal investigations are instituted against them, staying in the public, representing us in Parliament,” he said.
