Masiphumelele fire leaves 600 destitute

The Masiphumelele township near Hout Bay in Cape Town has once again been hit by a crippling fire. The area is a known fire hotspot and hundreds of families are regularly left homeless as a fire quickly spreads. The City of Cape Town says that over 100 shacks were completely destroyed by a fire that broke out during the early hours of Saturday morning.

A blaze ripped through Masiphumelele in the early hours of this morning, leaving a number of residents displaced. At 1.23 am on Saturday January 29, the City’s Fire and Rescue Service was alerted that there were informal structures on fire in Masemola Street. Fifteen firefighting appliances from various Fire Stations. And 50 firefighters extinguished the blaze by 7.24AM. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
The city has already called in Gift of The Givers together. The humanitarian group is on-site providing assistance to those affected alongside city officials.

The group’s own assessment contradicts the city, however. Gift of The Givers insists close to 600 people have been displaced. The organisation prepared and delivered hot nutritious meals to affected Masiphumelele residents earlier in the afternoon.

“These will be accompanied by bottled water, blankets and baby care packs as an initial intervention. Our vehicles are packed and ready. Gift of the Givers has assisted communities at Masiphumelele on previous occasions
