The woman who made headlines after being shackled to a hospital bench, has died.
Martha Marais passed away on Friday at the Eersterust Community Health Centre in Pretoria.
She was in her late 70s and had celebrated her son’s birthday just hours earlier.
A video of her tied to a bench at the Mamelodi Hospital sparked outrage last year.
Some hospital staff were placed on special leave as a result. The Health Department compensated her family with an undisclosed amount of money.
