Maritzburg United beat Baroka FC to stay third on the table

Bandile Shandu opened the scoring for United in the eighth minute with a sensational long-range strike that dipped into the bottom corner, 1-0.

Maritzburg United maintained the third spot in the Absa Premiership after defeating Baroka FC 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Andrea Fileccia almost doubled the Team of Choice’s lead in the 17th minute with a chance at the back post but he could not direct his header on target.

Pogiso Sanoka was unlucky in the 26th minute for United after his header was cleared off the line following a free-kick from Deolin Mekoa.

Bakgaga were often caught on counter-attacks as they were played a high line with five minutes of the half to go but Fadlu Davids’ men were not timing their runs to perfection.

The KwaZulu-Natal side were staying compact in the closing minutes of the first stanza and protected their 1-0 lead into the dressing room.

Siphesihle Ndlovu doubled the visitors’ lead two minutes into the second stanza with a cracking strike, 2-0. United was in control of the match after the hour-mark and always looked threatening on counter-attacks.

Belgian striker Fileccia was finding opportunities and gaps behind the Bakgaga defence, but he could not often beat the offside trap.

Mohau Mokate had a chance to make it 3-0 for United in the 81st minute with a free-kick from the edge of the box but his strike sailed over the bar.

Fadlu Davids’ men showed their defensive qualities in the last 10 minutes of the match and managed to keep the home side at bay to clinch the important three points.
