Police Minister Bheki Cele set to visit Mariannhill after deadly shootout

Police Minister Bheki Cele is expected to visit the Mariannhill area, west of Durban on Thursday.

This follows a deadly shooting where nine suspected criminals were killed by police during a shootout on Wednesday morning.

The police ministry said Wednesday’s visit is aimed at diving deeper into concerns raised by residents.

On Wednesday, the Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Mariannhill told the publication that crime in the area was out of control.

Chairperson, Dawood Chirwa, said the community was being terrorised by criminal elements.

“The community has suffered a lot and as you see, some houses are empty. I’m not saying it’s because of those killed here but when people see crime happening in the area, they decide to leave.”
