Manchester United players to loses wages after Champions League failure

A number of Manchester United’s players will lose 25 per cent of their wages after the club’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League, according to reports.

United’s hopes of securing a Champions League place were dashed after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at relegated Huddersfield.

Isaac Mbenza cancelled out Scott McTominay’s first-half opener for United, who twice hit the crossbar through Paul Pogba.

And that defeat is set to hit a number of players in the pocket, according to figures in Football Leaks: The Dirty Business of Football.

Paul Pogba is one player set to suffer from their Premier League placing with his £300,000-a-week contract heavily incentivised.

The France international will reportedly lose out on £1.875million every year that United fail to qualify for the Champions League.

It is understood that Pogba’s commercial rights also go up from £2.87m to £3.125m with Champions League qualification.

Another player that will count the cost of United playing in the Europa League next season is Alexis Sanchez, with the Chilean currently on wages of around £500,000-a-week.

The report adds that United insert clauses into most contracts negotiated at Old Trafford that means players lose 25 per cent of their wages if they miss out on Champions League football.

That would mean if Sanchez – who has been linked with a move away – stays at United then his wages could be cut by £125,000-a-week, meaning his new salary would be £375,000-a-week.

Other top earners including Romelu Lukaku, David de Gea and Fred would also be hit by the reductions, with the reported drop in wages music to the ears of potential suitors.
