CAPE TOWN – Tragedy struck off the southern coast of South Africa this weekend when a man died after a ski boat capsized near Cape Agulhas, southeast of Cape Town. The incident occurred on Saturday and has prompted renewed focus on boating safety and emergency response preparedness.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was alerted to the emergency after eyewitnesses reported seeing a vessel overturn in turbulent waters. Immediate action was taken to deploy rescue crews to the scene, where four individuals had been thrown into the sea.
According to NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon, the capsized ski boat had four occupants on board: a 50-year-old father, his two teenage daughters, and a young male believed to be in his 20s.
All four were pulled from the water by NSRI rescue swimmers and transferred to the NSRI Agulhas rescue base, where medical treatment was administered. Unfortunately, the father was found unresponsive upon retrieval.
“A doctor at the rescue base initiated CPR efforts, but after all attempts to resuscitate the man were exhausted, he was sadly declared deceased,” said Lambinon.
The two daughters and the young male were physically unharmed and did not require hospitalization. However, they were visibly shaken and received trauma counseling shortly after the incident.
Man Dies After Ski Boat Capsizes in Rough Agulhas Seas
NSRI, along with local emergency services, continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ski boat capsizing. Efforts are underway to recover the overturned vessel, which remains in the water near the site of the incident.
The body of the deceased man has been handed over to the Department of Health’s Forensic Pathology Services, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the precise cause of death. Preliminary indications suggest drowning or cardiac arrest, but official confirmation is pending.
Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of the African continent, is notorious for rough seas and sudden weather changes. The area where the ski boat capsized is known for strong currents and unpredictable wave patterns, posing challenges even for experienced boaters.
“While conditions may appear calm from shore, the waters off Agulhas can be deceptively dangerous,” said a local marine safety expert. “This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the risks involved in recreational boating, especially in open seas.”
Weather reports from Saturday indicate that wind speeds were moderate, but swell conditions may have contributed to the boat’s instability.
In the wake of the incident, the NSRI has reiterated its call for all recreational boaters to prioritize safety and ensure proper preparation before venturing out to sea.
Some key recommendations include:
-
Ensuring all passengers wear certified life jackets at all times
-
Carrying up-to-date marine safety equipment and communication devices
-
Monitoring weather forecasts and sea conditions before departure
-
Completing a float plan and notifying someone on land of your estimated return time
-
Participating in boating safety courses, especially for those taking friends or family members out to sea
“This was a tragic loss of life, and our hearts go out to the family. We urge the public to always be cautious and follow maritime safety protocols,” said Lambinon.
News of the man who died after a ski boat capsized has prompted an outpouring of support from the Agulhas community and beyond. Many residents offered condolences to the family and praised the NSRI’s swift response.
“They were out there trying to enjoy time together as a family. It’s heartbreaking,” said one local resident. “We’re grateful to the NSRI for acting so quickly, even though the outcome wasn’t what anyone hoped for.”
The deceased man’s identity has not yet been released, pending formal notification of next of kin. Family members are currently receiving support from grief counselors.
The heartbreaking incident in Agulhas this weekend underscores the ever-present dangers of the ocean, even during recreational outings. As one man dies after a ski boat capsizes, authorities and safety experts are urging all boaters to remain vigilant, well-equipped, and informed before heading into potentially hazardous waters.
With boating season still active along South Africa’s coastline, the NSRI reminds all seafarers — from fishermen to families — that preparedness can be the difference between life and death.
