Man arrested for allegedly r@ping 77-year-old Gogo

Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha, said the woman had been sleeping at her home on Wednesday evening when a young man allegedly kicked in the door of her room at around 23:00.

Police in Butterworth have arrested a man for allegedly r@ping a 77-year-old woman in Mthulu Village, Butterworth earlier this week.

“He then accosted her and she was overpowered by the suspect. It is then that the suspect allegedly r@ped her,” he said.

Manatha said a case of rape had been registered at Butterworth police station and members of the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and S.e.xual Offences Unit (FCS) had investigated, leading to the arrest of a 25-year-old man for the alleged r@pe on Friday.

He said the man would appear before the Butterworth Magistrate Court on Monday, 13 August on a rape charge.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu condemned the alleged r@pe of an elderly person and the abuse of women and children in general.

He welcomed the arrest of the suspect and congratulated the Butterworth FCS Unit investigators for their swift actions in tracing and arresting the perpetrator.
