Nonesi Mall in Komani, in the Eastern Cape has been closed.

This came after three shops caught fire on Saturday evening.

Shopper Siyabulela Williams, who was there when the fire started, told Daily Sun he saw people running from the mall.

“I was in one of the shops when I heard people shout ‘fire’! I tried to see where the fire was coming from, but I could not see where it started,” he said.

A taxi driver said the mall had a problem. He said last week one shop was on fire and three more followed within a few days. “Some shops leak when it rains,” he said.

Centre manager Shaun Roux said the fire originated in an Ackermans store and spread to Pep Home and Shoe City.

“Firefighters were called to the scene and the municipalityhelped to contain the fire. Ackermans was completely burnt down, Pep suffered severe damage, while Shoe City suffered partial damages,” said Roux.

“Nonesi Mall is currently closed for health and safety reasons. Centre management cannot state at this point in time when the mall will reopen.”

Roux said they were waiting for feedback from the fire chief on when the mall would be safe for trade.

“This is a big tragedy for Nonesi Mall and we are relieved there were no injuries. Management is doing everything in its power to restore normal trade as soon as possible.

“We will keep the public informed on when normal trade will resume on the mall’s Facebook page,” he said.

Police spokeswoman Captain Namhla Mdleleni said no case was opened.
