Mabopane train station to be closed for a year

About R1,1-billion will be used to get Mabopane rail services, north of Pretoria, back on track. In the meantime, the Mabopane station will be closed for a year. Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says the refurbishment should be finished by 2021. Mabopane is one of the stations that’s been crippled by cable theft and vandalism.

This is what’s left of the vandalised train station in Mabopane. Authorities have had no choice but to shut down services for a year to allow for refurbishment. Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says they have a temporary plan.

Mbalula said, “we will have to provide about 80 buses, we need to get permission from Treasury and ensure that we support the community as we get this place back. Last year, President Cyril Ramaphosa got stuck on this line, while inspecting service delivery.

Passenger rail agency Prasa says it’s facing enormous problems. Prasa administrator Bongisiwe Mpondo said, “52 percent of our on-track elements have been vandalised, even if you look behind you, you can see cables hanging and we are sitting with a dire situation. Commuters want authorities to do more to protect the line once it’s fully operational.

Paul Soto from the United Commuters Voice said, “we want to see railway police in the train and we want to see them so that our commuters can feel safe when they are inside. The Transport Minister says no time should be wasted in revitalising the line to provide a seamless service to commuters.
