AZAPO: Enyobeni tavern owners sentence doesn’t send stern message to liquor operators

The Azanian People’s Organisation (AZAPO) criticized the sentence handed down to the Enyobeni tavern owners, stating that it did not send a stern enough message to liquor operators.

Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu have been given a R5,000 fine or a 100-day prison sentence for selling alcohol to minors.

Twenty-one under-aged children died under mysterious circumstances that are still under investigation at the establishment in 2022 during a Pens Down celebration.

The political party said the country needed to do better in addressing the issue of underage drinking and drug abuse.

AZAPO Spokesperson Jabu Rakwena said, “AZAPO is calling for a strict dialogue around the advertising of alcohol, the legal age around the sale of alcohol, and the culture of public drinking under the guise of pens down, after tears, and chilling.”
