Man Drowns After Allegedly Throwing Himself into Tzaneen Dam
Authorities in Tzaneen are investigating an alleged drowning incident after a 48-year-old man, identified as Phillie Vhuma, was reportedly seen jumping into Tzaneen Dam.
According to provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng, the incident occurred on Sunday around 7 am.
“An eyewitness who was doing morning physical training exercises saw an African male wearing a yellow t-shirt and dark pants standing on top of the bridge at Tzaneen Dam,” said Thakeng.

At first, the witness did not think much of it. However, an hour later, the same individual jumped into the dam, visibly struggling to swim before ultimately drowning.
The police were alerted, and the SAPS search and rescue team was immediately dispatched to retrieve the body.
“The deceased was identified as Phillie Vhuma, aged 48, by his next of kin. A case of inquest has been registered for further investigation,” Thakeng confirmed.
75-Year-Old Man Allegedly Commits Suicide After Shooting Another Man
In a separate incident, police in Limpopo are investigating the death of a 75-year-old man who allegedly shot another man, set his house on fire, and later took his own life.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the dramatic chain of events unfolded on Friday at around midnight.
The elderly suspect was reportedly driving around in search of a man who had sold him bricks. When he finally located the victim on the street, he opened fire without any warning.
“The suspect, who was driving his own vehicle, met the victim on the street in his vehicle. Without saying any words, he shot him in the upper body. The victim managed to drive himself to the nearest hospital,” Ledwaba explained.
After the shooting, the 75-year-old suspect returned home and, upon arrival, poured a flammable liquid around his house and set it on fire.
His wife, who was sleeping in another room, was woken up by the commotion. The suspect threatened to kill her, ordering her to enter the burning house with him.
“Fortunately, the wife managed to escape, and the suspect tried to chase and shoot her several times with no luck,” said Ledwaba.
Realizing that he could not harm his wife, the suspect later turned the firearm on himself.
“Later, the suspect shot himself and passed away at the scene,” Ledwaba confirmed.
Authorities have now opened an inquest case to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shocking events.
