A company in Johannesburg is looking for a Lighting Designer

Main Objectives:

Design Lighting for Live events (in consultation with Director/Client), including, but not limited to:
Develop, design concept, create Lighting Plot, schedules and equipment lists.
Dissemination of necessary Lighting information to designated Lighting team.
Facilitation of get-in and operation.
Overall responsibility for the visual appearance of the Event.
Function as Senior Lighting Technician as required, including:
Execution of the technical aspects of a Live Event within his/her field of expertise according to top production standards.
Controlling and coordinating all Lighting aspects and personnel on a specific job.
Ensuring that preparation, installation and dis-assembly of Lighting equipment and associated activities are carried out safely according to the South African Occupational Health and Safety Act and company standard practice.
Maintain a thorough understanding of Health and Safety Practices within the Live Event Industry.
Proactively develop Lighting staff through skills transfer and mentorship.
Requirements:

Matric
Relevant diploma or tertiary qualification
Extensive knowledge of the lighting industry and event technical supply
In-depth knowledge of lighting equipment, practices and safety standards including their application to live events installations
Working knowledge of design principles and CAD design programmes
Basic Knowledge:

MS Office proficient
Responsibilities:

Design

Take creative brief from Client or Project Manager.
Translate Lighting concept into technical design.
Execution

Draw up Lighting Plot.
Draw up Equipment lists from Lighting plot.
Revise Design and equipment lists.
Workshop Pre- Production

Check the Lighting equipment lists against technical information, ensuring that the list is comprehensive and accurate.
Design or familiarise him/herself with the Lighting equipment list, schedule and drawings (when available).
Work out the logistics of the load-in and load-out in conjunction with the Project Manager and Operations Manager.
Relay all necessary information to members of the Lighting team.
Oversee and assist with the preparation of Lighting equipment for load-in, ensuring that the preparation areas are kept clean and safe.
Check that the equipment being scanned/loaded corresponds to the Lighting equipment list and that any extras have been authorised.
Post Production

Oversee and assist with truck loading and off-loading as well as the return of equipment into storage after the event.
Report any damage to Lighting equipment or Gearhouse property to the Lighting Workshop Manager immediately.
Onsite

Conduct a site reconnaissance where necessary.
Make sure that he/she has a production schedule or an understanding of call times and event dates.
Control the productivity and efficiency of technicians under his/her authority, ensuring that the technical schedules are adhered to.
Manage the Lighting team on-site ensuring that they execute their duties efficiently, conduct themselves appropriately on-site and adhere to dress codes and safety standards.
Serve as liaison between Lighting crewmembers and the client or Project Manager
Monitor and assist with the Lighting installation according to drawings, plans and/or instruction.
Install complex Lighting systems utilising thorough knowledge of generic and intelligent light fixtures, assembly of trussing and associated lighting desks, dimmers and associated electrical equipment.
Program/operate Lighting equipment for complex shows as necessary for rehearsals or set-up requirements as well as the actual event.
Test defective equipment to determine cause of malfunction or failure (trouble shoot) and replace or repair as required.
Perform advanced diagnostics, preventative maintenance and repairs of equipment within his/her capabilities.
Report damaged equipment to the Lighting Workshop Manager, log any on-site repairs or arrange for the appropriate repairs on returning the equipment to the Workshop.
Solve any on-site problems within the scope of his/her capabilities.
After the event, supervise and assist with the dismantling of equipment and loading of trucks, ensuring that no equipment is left behind on-site.
Assume responsibility for the due care of personal tools and company equipment/property by Lighting crew members.
Take precautionary measures to protect third party equipment/property.
Complete and hand in a Job Report for each job.
Touring

Ensure that his/her passport is kept current and make him/herself available for any tour-related paperwork required.
General

Keep technical knowledge and skills updated.
Assist management with any other duties as may be required.
Uphold Gearhouse image and values at all times.
Assist with quotes on Hiretrack.
