The South African Government eased lockdown restrictions in Level 3 thus previously restricted activities were officially opened. Alcohol sales were allowed to resume after 3 months of restrictions, this resulted in the resurgence of home-brewed beer as boozers seek to quench their thirst.

Over the period more than 8 home-brewed beer deaths were reported and SAB the major brewer in South Africa faced the risk of throwing away millions of alcohol liters.

Beer sales returns but with restrictions, this resulted in massive queuing as thirsty South Africans seek to have that long waited sip of their precious liquor. However, there are still arguments on the logic behind allowing alcohol sales.

EFF leader Julius Malema criticized the government over its position on alcohol sales. In his press conference on the transition to level 3, Malema said the government is bringing beer halls and clubs in the residential areas and this will lead to increased abuse and domestic violence.

On the first day of resumption of alcohol sales, there was reported an increase in alcohol-related crimes and social ills. The CEO of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital revealed that in the last 24 hours patients in their trauma units doubled. Majority of patients were drunk, with stab wounds, some were involved in accidents. She says the emergency unit was busy.
