Level 3 lockdown: Mines to return to full capacity

Mining in South Africa will return to full capacity under lockdown level three regulations. Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe announced this during an inter-ministerial media briefing of government’s economic cluster.
“Under alert level three, all deep mining operations are expected to ramp-up to full capacity, this brings mining to full capacity of production,” Mantashe said.
The minister urged that mineworkers’ safety and health should be prioritised. Monday, several sectors will be reopened for people to return to work and stimulate the economy.
“The measures that we have taken have been developed in line with the call by the president for government to consult and implement a risk-based strategy that will enable a phased recovery of the economy,” Mantashe said.
Mantashe also announced that 384 mineworkers have tested positive for COVID-19. The minister said most mines were doing well on screening for the virus but lagged behind in testing.
He said as of Thursday, the mining industry had tested over 4,600 people for the coronavirus. Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday.
