The bodies of at least 39 suspected illegal miners have been found in less than 24 hours.
31 of them believed to be Lesotho nationals have died at an abandoned mine shaft in Welkom in the Free State.
In Gauteng, police have discovered eight bodies of suspected Zama Zamas at a dumping site in Germiston.
The bodies were wrapped in white sacks and police have opened an inquest into the matter.
