KZN Traffic Authorities on High Alert as Heavy Rain Causes Road Accidents

KZN traffic authorities are closely monitoring major routes across KwaZulu-Natal after multiple road accidents were reported on Sunday. The province is currently being battered by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms, prompting officials to step up safety measures and deploy emergency response teams.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning that the severe weather conditions are expected to persist until Monday. Motorists have been urged to drive cautiously, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep updated on road closures and diversions.

The adverse weather conditions have already caused several accidents across KwaZulu-Natal, including a major crash involving a truck carrying motor vehicles on the N3 highway near Durban. The incident led to traffic congestion and delays, with emergency services rushing to the scene to clear the road and assist motorists.

KZN Traffic Authorities Respond to Multiple Accidents

KZN traffic authorities have activated rapid response teams to patrol major highways and provincial routes. Their primary focus is to prevent secondary accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.

Ndabezinhle Sibiya, spokesperson for the provincial Department of Transport, confirmed the deployment of additional traffic officers and inspectors to deal with the increased risks on the roads.

“We have ensured that our highly dedicated team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) is working flat out along the major routes,” said Sibiya. “We are also working with traffic departments in various municipalities to ensure the safety of motorists.”

The South African Weather Service has placed KwaZulu-Natal on a Level 4 warning for heavy rainfall. Forecasters predict that the downpour will continue into Monday, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms in several parts of the province, including eThekwini, Pietermaritzburg, and the North Coast.

Flooding on some low-lying roads has already been reported, and authorities are cautioning drivers to avoid crossing flooded bridges and to keep headlights on for better visibility. Poor driving conditions, reduced visibility, and slippery roads are expected to continue throughout the night.

KZN traffic authorities have also warned of potential road closures if flooding worsens, particularly on the N3 and N2 highways, which are critical transport routes for freight and commuters.

The accident involving the vehicle carrier truck on the N3 has become a stark reminder of the dangers posed by wet and slippery road conditions. According to initial reports, the truck lost control due to reduced traction, causing a multi-vehicle collision that left several lanes blocked.

Emergency personnel worked for hours to remove debris and clear the road. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, but several motorists sustained injuries and were treated on the scene.

This incident prompted KZN traffic authorities to issue renewed calls for caution, reminding motorists to reduce their speed and increase following distances during heavy rainfall.

The provincial transport department has activated a coordinated safety plan involving multiple stakeholders, including the Road Traffic Inspectorate, SAPS, municipal traffic units, and emergency medical services.

Traffic officers have been deployed at strategic points along major routes to monitor traffic flow, assist with accident management, and guide motorists through dangerous stretches of road. Real-time monitoring systems are also being used to detect congestion, breakdowns, and road closures more efficiently.

“Our teams are working around the clock to respond quickly to incidents,” Sibiya added. “We urge motorists to cooperate with instructions from traffic officers and avoid taking unnecessary risks.”

As KZN traffic authorities ramp up their efforts, they have also shared important safety tips for motorists traveling in wet weather conditions:

  1. Slow down and keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead to allow more time to brake.

  2. Switch on headlights and hazard lights where necessary to improve visibility.

  3. Avoid flooded areas and low-lying bridges, which can be dangerous or impassable.

  4. Do not use cruise control on wet roads, as it can reduce driver control.

  5. Pull over in a safe area if visibility is severely reduced.

Motorists are urged to check the latest traffic updates on reliable platforms before leaving home and to avoid traveling at night if possible.

KwaZulu-Natal residents should brace for continued rainfall into the early part of the week, according to SAWS. Disaster management teams are on standby in case of flooding or road closures, particularly in areas prone to stormwater runoff.

KZN traffic authorities say their teams will remain on high alert throughout the severe weather period, with continuous patrols, road monitoring, and coordination with emergency services to keep major routes safe and operational.

With heavy rains and strong winds creating hazardous driving conditions, KZN traffic authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution. Through increased patrols, rapid response teams, and collaboration with local municipalities, the province aims to prevent further accidents and safeguard lives.

As weather conditions evolve, motorists are encouraged to stay informed, plan ahead, and cooperate with traffic officers to ensure safe travel for everyone on KwaZulu-Natal’s roads.
