VIDEO: Heavy rain washes away part of KZN house and road

Heavy rains have washed away an electricity pole, torn a house apart, and washed away a road at 5 Twilight Avenue in La Mercy, KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

According to a resident in the area, stormwater rushed through the property, ripping the other section apart, leaving the remaining part on the edge.

The road was also washed away into the ditch, along with part of the house.

The family was told to vacate the house as it was not safe to live in it.

Officials were at the house investigating the matter.

South African Weather Service forecaster Tokelo Chiloane warned residents to expect an 80% chance of showers and thundershowers over KwaZulu-Natal and eastern parts of Eastern Cape on Monday and Tuesday.

A yellow L2 warning for rain leading to localized flooding has been issued.

“We are also expecting a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers – similar condition on Tuesday, with 80% of showers and thundershowers expected in KwaZulu-Natal. Cold weather conditions are also expected with snowfall over the high-lying areas of KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape,” she said.

The weather service issued a watch for disruptive rain on Tuesday in Estcourt, Ethekwini, Stanger, Nkandla, Pietermaritzburg, and Ladysmith.

“The disruptive rain is expected to result in localized flooding of susceptible settlements, roads and low-lying areas and bridges, the possible closure of roads crossing low water bridges and rockfalls.

“Localised flooding of susceptible formal/informal settlements and low-lying bridges is possible. Difficult driving conditions can be expected on dirt roads. Increased travel times can be expected on major roads due to poor driving conditions. Poor visibility and slippery roads may result in minor motor vehicle accidents. Localized damages to mud-based houses is also possible. Localized mudslides and soil erosion can be expected along with damage to mud-based houses,” it said.

Temperatures will start to recover in KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape on Thursday, leading to warmer weather.
