A fire broke out at an informal settlement near Kwa Mai Mai in Johannesburg in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Emergency services say one person has died, and several others have been rushed to hospital.
Dozens of homes have been destroyed.
Emergency services are on the scene and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
A blaze at the settlement last year claimed the lives of 9 people.
