Lobby group AfriForum announced at a media briefing on Tuesday morning that it will be representing the family of late Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa in the investigation into his murder.
Head of the organization’s private prosecuting unit Advocate Gerrie Nel has been appointed as the family’s advocate.
AfriForum says they are stepping in following the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) failing to institute prosecution.
The organisation’s CEO, Kallie Kriel, said: “It is important that AfriForum gets involved in cases such as these – it’s in the interest of the whole country that the criminal justice system functions properly.
“AfriForum serves as a counterweight to the failure of the state, and as a civil rights watchdog, it is our duty to prevent the criminal justice system from collapsing.

“The Meyiwa family are proud to be associated with an organization that is bold enough to stand with us in the fight for justice in this case. We are therefore calling on all reasonable South Africans of all races to stand with us and oppose this injustice.
“The Meyiwa family deserves justice.”
Senzo’s brother, Siyabonga Meyiwa, said at the press briefing: “We, together with AfriForum, want to honour Senzo by ensuring that justice is served, and his murderers are brought to book.
Social media was flooded with reactions to AfriForum’s announcement that renowned Advocate Gerrie Nel had been appointed to represent the family of Senzo Meyiwa. Others went as far as accusing Kelly Khumalo of lending a hand in the murder of her married boyfriend Senzo, who was Mandisa Mkhize’s husband. However, other social media users where quick to defend Kelly, who even got impregnated by the married goalkeeper.
AfriForum comes on board five years after Meyiwa was gunned down in an alleged botched robbery at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s family home in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.
Social media was soon filled with comments and memes in reaction to the news, with some slamming police and prosecution authorities for “failing” the Meyiwa family.
Others joked that they were ready to apply for their AfriForum membership cards if they crack the case.
Y’all never thought you’ll find yourselves cheering for #Afriforum huh? 😂 Life is very long… #SenzoMeyiwa

Adv Gerri Nel doesn’t play. Everyone who was in that house, every Politician involved, every corrupt Police officer is going straight to jail. All Of Them.

Following the new developments with AfriForum taking part in the case, Kelly Khumalo’s name trended on Twitter. Many of the comments lambasted the Unleashed singer, accusing her of knowing more then she is letting on. One social media user wrote, “I think I’m [going to] have to make a Thelma and Louis meme soon, starring Kelly Khumalo and Vicky Momberg.”
However, there were social media users that came in defence of the singer, with one asking, “Are you guys going to apologize to Kelly Khumalo when you find out she didn’t kill Senzo?” Another social media stated, “I love Kelly Khumalo, I really do. But if she had anything to do with Senzo Meyiwa’s death, she must be convicted or anyone else for that matter. It can’t be right that such a prominent citizen of our country still has his case unresolved. It says a lot about our justice system.”

I love Kelly Khumalo, I really do. But If she had anything to do with #SenzoMeyiwa‘s death, she must be convicted. Or anyone else for that matter. It can’t be right that such a prominent citizen of our country still has his case unresolved. It says a lot about our justice system.

In other news – Lerato Kganyago not happy with black women who bullied Rachel Kolisi
If you thought the thirst over Siya Kolisi was bad, it’s getting worse. Women on social media were not hiding the fact that after the Springboks captain lead the team to victory, they will be sliding into his DMs. Apparently, Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi also slid into the captain’s DMs too.

If you may recall last year, Siya’s wife Rachel Kolisi called out a woman for sliding into Siya’s DMs. Rachel was then dragged by tweeps who called her an ‘insecure’ WAG and was told to stop overreacting. Now that Siya is on everyone’s lips again, Rachel was disrespected again and was told to not freak out over fans. continue reading
