Kaizer Chiefs coach rules out signing new goalkeeper

Kaizer Chiefs coach rules out signing a new goalkeeper. Ernst Middendorp has hinted that Kaizer Chiefs may not pursue a replacement for Itumeleng Khune during the January transfer period. Khune has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.

Khune has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. Virgil Vries has taken over the number one role from him, with Bruce Bvuma as his cover. Brylon Petersen is also an option for Amakhosi, having been promoted to the senior team from the Diski Challenge side.

Chiefs have been linked with Bidvest Wits’ Darren Keet and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper stopper Thela Ngobeni during the current transfer period, however, Middendorp says he is happy with what he has in the goalkeeping department.

“I believe in the goalkeeper department we are in, we trust the other players we have. Yes, they might not have the same experience or being capable of the same game minutes in the PSL or international like Itu, but it’s okay,” Middendorp told reporters.

“It’s very difficult to put a different setup in at the moment, there’s no club who will give you a goalkeeper for you to be in a different position. So, let’s work with the guys we have, give them confidence and ask them to do the right stuff and be good, qualified members of the team.”

Meanwhile, Middendorp revealed how Khune got injured at training.

“It was a clash with Willard Katsande, and unfortunately it was Willard – had it been another player it would probably have been a little softer, but it happens in a training session. Both were in the same team, both went for a 50/50 ball, and out, what can you do?”
