Ex-Orlando Pirates midfielder John Moeti has passed away

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder and Bafana Bafana 1996 African Cup of Nations winner John Moeti aka Dungi has died!

The family confirmed in a statement on Monday morning that the popular soccer legend (55) has died after he took ill a last few months.

The statement issued on behalf of the Moeti and Rakhale Family by Family Spokesperson, Victor Rakhale reads: “It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John “Dungi” Moeti.”

“John suddenly took ill eight months ago and was receiving specialist medical care. John succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning (6th February 2023) at home, surrounded by his family and brethren in prayer. We thank you sincerely for your prayers and steadfast support.”

The family wishes to be afforded privacy during this time of loss, and funeral details will be advised in due course.

John also played for SuperSport United, he was also part of the Pirates team that won the 1995 CAF Champions League title and a member of the Bafana squad that lifted the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.
