Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba to visit Alexandra

Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba is set to visit Alexandra township on Monday.

The visit follows two weeks of protests.

On Friday, Mashaba met with Alex councillors at his office.

Residents have been demonstrating against lawlessness, poor service delivery and the increasing number of informal structures in the area.

Mashaba has blamed the housing backlog on the national and provincial government.

He also accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of lying to the people of Alex.

“The president has promised the people of Alex a million houses. He’s lying,” said Mashaba.

“He doesn’t have money to build houses for the entire country, not just Alexandra.”

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance is demanding that National Police Commissioner Khehla Sithole meet with them.

They say they are in possession of proof that ANC leaders instigated the protests in DA-led municipalities.

They say this was done for political gain.

Leader Mmusi Maimane says they’ll give the national police commissioner their proof.

The party also intends laying a formal complaint with the IEC against the governing party.
