ActionSA, IFP, ACDP & UIM in coalition talks over new Joburg mayor

Members of ActionSA, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), and the United Independent Movement (UIM) are exploring the possibility of a coalition – in hopes of finding a suitable mayor for Johannesburg.
Mayoral candidate names are expected to be deliberated upon and put forward at Tuesday’s council meeting.
This comes after Thapelo Amad resigned as the mayor of Johannesburg on Monday.
Amad of the Al Jama-ah party held office for only four months, after being elected interim mayor with the support of the African National Congress (ANC) in January.
Speaking on behalf of the four parties, Michael Beaumont said their coalition talks were focused on bringing stability and services to a city that had been neglected.
“These parties are working together to see if we can provide a pathway to a majority in the city of Johannesburg on Tuesday. At the core of all efforts must be stability in the city of Johannesburg and this is our focus as we begin these talks.”
