As a powerful cold front sweeps across Gauteng, Joburg emergency services have issued a safety alert, urging residents to take extreme care when using heating devices. The warning comes as temperatures are expected to plummet over the coming days, with the South African Weather Service forecasting freezing conditions, strong winds, and intermittent showers across the province.
With a significant drop in temperatures already recorded in several areas of Joburg, emergency teams are bracing for a spike in weather-related incidents — particularly house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning — linked to unsafe heating methods.
The City of Johannesburg’s Disaster Management Centre has activated its winter readiness plan. Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed that disaster response teams are on high alert to deal with any emergencies that may arise as the weather worsens.
“We are urging residents across Joburg to exercise caution when using any form of heating device. Items such as electric heaters, imbawulas, paraffin stoves, and gas appliances can pose a serious fire hazard if not properly used,” said Mulaudzi.
“Do not leave heating devices unattended, and ensure proper ventilation at all times. Our main goal is to prevent avoidable tragedies, especially during this period of extremely cold weather,” he added.
As the mercury drops, residents in informal settlements and areas with limited access to electricity often rely on open flames and alternative heat sources such as paraffin heaters, coal stoves, and makeshift wood-burning devices. These methods, while effective in providing warmth, are notorious for increasing the risk of house fires and toxic gas exposure.
Over the past few winters, Joburg has witnessed a number of tragic incidents involving fatal shack fires and burn injuries, largely due to the misuse or malfunctioning of heating equipment. Emergency officials say these incidents spike during cold spells, as more people turn to potentially dangerous methods to keep warm.
“It’s during this time that we see a surge in callouts related to fires in residential areas — particularly informal settlements,” said Mulaudzi. “These are preventable emergencies. A few simple precautions can save lives.”
To reduce the risk of fire or injury during this cold snap, Joburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) have issued a series of practical tips for safe heating at home:

In response to the cold front, the City of Johannesburg has also increased its support for homeless individuals and vulnerable households. Temporary shelters, additional blankets, and warm meals are being provided through various outreach programs run in collaboration with non-governmental organisations.
“We are working closely with social development departments and NGOs to ensure that the most vulnerable people in our city are not left out in the cold,” said Mulaudzi. “No one should have to endure freezing temperatures without shelter or warmth.”
The city’s winter plan includes intensified patrols by social workers and EMS personnel to identify at-risk individuals and ensure they are moved to safe locations where shelter and support services are available.

The South African Weather Service has warned that the current cold front may persist for several days, with additional cold spells likely throughout the winter season. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to heed all warnings and advisories.
While the winter months are always challenging, officials believe that with heightened awareness and community cooperation, Joburg can avoid unnecessary tragedies and keep residents safe.
“The safety of our communities is a shared responsibility,” said Mulaudzi. “We’re calling on everyone in Joburg to stay vigilant, help those in need, and make safety a priority in every household.”
