Four inmates have escaped from the Rooigrond Correctional Centre near Mahikeng, North West.
The Correctional Services Department says the four escaped Tuesday morning.
A manhunt has been launched.
The criminals are considered dangerous.
The Department is appealing to the public to assist with any information that may lead to their recapture.
A full investigation into their escape has also been opened.
The inmates:
Zacharia Francisco Nyalimate – convicted for housebreaking and murder. He is serving 27 years.
Alfred Gwambe – convicted for housebreaking, theft and possession of a stolen vehicle. He is serving 65 years.
Siyabonga Sithole – convicted for rape, theft and housebreaking, he is serving a life sentence.
Edward Madiba – convicted for robbery and firearm possession. He is serving 15 years.
