Its road network improvement drive, launched on Saturday, will include, grass cutting, patching of potholes, and fixing traffic lights.

“This is a very very important breakthrough for us. The reason why we have decided to launch this programme is that we have come to appreciate that the impact of the lockdown,” Mamabolo said.

“The backlogs that were there even before lockdown, have all contributed to even greater massive backlogs in potholes, bad conditions on the road, hazardous conditions on the road that pose a threat to lives of people.

“So we have to do this programme to save lives, to play our part in road safety and making share that our roads mustn’t deteriorate to a point where we will not have any roads to carry economic movement of people,” he said.

“We’re taking extraordinary measures; working Saturday and Sundays. We needed extraordinary effort to be able to crack the backlog that has accumulated overtime to make sure we bring great relief to the residents of Gauteng.”
