It is often easier to get a gun from the street than obtain a license according to Thokozani Jacob Masilela, chairperson of the Gauteng Provincial Community Police Board.
He says most of the guns are coming into the country illegally.
Masilela said, “We are having a problem with guns in general; its so easy to get a gun from the street than obtain a license.”
“What happens is that these are the guns that are illegal: most of the guns are coming into the country illegally.”
“We also have a problem with guns that we lose in the law enforcement agencies.”
“The premier has talked about tracking of all guns of the state, tracking devices so we can be able to follow up and know where you are.”
“Technology will also help us in that. But generally, we have an issue of illegal firearms because of that we have the gun violence that we see.”
