
KwaZulu-Natal officials said that recent disaster management assessments revealed that approximately 1,000 homes were destroyed by severe rains in the province.
The province was hit by severe weather conditions late last week into the weekend.
Heavy rains, strong winds, and thunderstorms left nearly 4,000 people stranded.
Public infrastructure was also badly damaged.
Disaster management teams in the province are continuing with their assessments in affected districts.
Initial reports determined that 70 homes were left damaged in Mtubatuba alone.
Cooperative Governance MEC, Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, said the situation was worse across the province.
“Our latest report indicates that nearly 1,000 households have been assessed, with houses damaged, affecting over 4,000 people.”
She said healthcare facilities were also not spared.
“In the health sector, seven health facilities, including two hospitals in eThekwini and Ladysmith, were also impacted.”
Some affected families were pleading with the government for immediate intervention.
