Deputy Minister Hlongwa laid to rest

Family, friends and ANC leaders came to bid farewell to Deputy Mineral Resources Minister Bavelile Hlongwa, at her funeral service in Durban.

She died in a road accident last week.

Many spoke about her dedication to the country and her fight for women’s rights.

Hlongwa has been hailed a hero and a fearless champion of women and youth.

ANCWL president Bathabile Dlamini said Hlongwa was a profound, intelligent, dynamic and revolutionary cadre of the ANC.

“She would speak her mind. The things she would say had been carefully thought out and examined. She was going to be one of South Africa’s experts.”

Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe described her as an asset to the department while the president says the country lost a future leader.

“Bavelile passed away in service to her people. As a result of her untimely death, we lost a captivating glimpse of the future leaders of our country and movement.”

Hlongwa who joined the ANC at the age of 18, leaves behind her mother, four children, and five siblings.
