Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane provided details of the operation:

“A suspect, aged 48, was found in possession of the said vehicle, hence his arrest. He was also charged for possession of the suspected hijacked vehicle. Another suspect, aged 40, who was driving a silver Toyota Corolla, was also nabbed. It is suspected that he was escorting the hijacked vehicle.”

Details of the Incident

The Toyota Hilux had been hijacked in Vosman before the suspects were apprehended during a coordinated effort between police and the tracking company. The vehicle was recovered intact, and both suspects were taken into custody without incident.

The role of the second suspect, who was driving the Toyota Corolla, remains under investigation. Police suspect he was providing escort services for the stolen bakkie, a common tactic used by vehicle theft syndicates.

Praise for Law Enforcement

Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, commended the officers for their diligence and teamwork:

“This successful operation showcases the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and tracking companies. Recovering stolen vehicles and arresting suspects sends a strong message to criminals.”

Similar Case in Mpumalanga

This recent arrest comes on the heels of another vehicle theft incident in Acornhoek, Mpumalanga, in November 2024. At the time, police arrested six individuals, including a pastor, for possession of a stolen vehicle.

Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi described the circumstances of the previous case:

“Police officers were conducting a routine patrol near Klaserie Dam when they spotted a suspicious vehicle with six occupants. The vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, had only one registration plate in front. Upon further investigation, it was confirmed that the car had been reported stolen in 2011 at Maake SAPS in Limpopo province.”

The pastor, who was among the arrested individuals, claimed to have purchased the car from a private seller in Acornhoek. Investigations into that case are ongoing.

Escalating Vehicle Theft Concerns

Vehicle theft remains a pressing issue in South Africa, with stolen cars often being used for criminal activities or smuggled across borders. Tracking companies have become a crucial ally in assisting law enforcement agencies to recover stolen vehicles promptly.

The latest arrest in Vosman highlights the sophistication of car theft syndicates, which often use escort vehicles to evade detection. Police continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities.

Court Appearance and Ongoing Investigation

The two suspects arrested for possession of the stolen Toyota Hilux will appear in court on Monday, January 29, 2025. The investigation is expected to shed light on the suspects’ possible links to larger vehicle theft syndicates operating in the region.

Police have assured the public that efforts to curb car theft will be intensified, and they will continue to collaborate with private companies and community members to bring perpetrators to justice.

As the case unfolds, the focus remains on dismantling criminal networks and recovering stolen assets to ensure the safety and security of all South Africans.
