Former Zimbabwe pace bowler, who took an untimely retirement from the world of cricket, Henry Olonga has now opted for a different profession.
He was the first black cricketer in the Zimbabwe team, but his career did not last very long. He played for 5 years, however, we Indians remember him for two matches only.
After the player retired from world cricket in 2003, he was nowhere to be seen. Now, he is back in the news but this time not for his cricket. Just recently, the former cricketer was seen on the sets of Australian singing talent show – ‘The Voice Australia’.
Even if his cricket career might have been brief and with limited high points, he shone on the show. He was wearing a nice crisp blue suit and wooed the audience with his voice in just 11 seconds.

Henry Olonga performed “this is the moment” by Anthony Warlow and boy did he sing it well. It is a blind audition that is supposed to be a one and a half minute long. One of the judges although pressed the buzzer in only thirty seconds and all of them were mesmerized by his voice. The judges also had a bit of a tussle in wanting to get Olonga on their team.
By the end of the performance, the crowd was cheering and hooting for the former cricketer. Olonga qualified for the next round and took to his Twitter to express his feelings:
What a privilege to be able to sing on this amazing stage. It is a far cry from my former life and thank you to England and Australia for adopting me as one of their own and allowing me to explore new horizons.
We remember him for the thrashing Sachin and Zaheer have given him in ODI cricket. Now, he seems to establish himself as a singer in the minds of the fans and we wish him all the luck!
