Nottingham Forest Part Ways with Head Coach Nuno Espirito Santo

Head Coach Nuno Espirito Santo- Nottingham Forest have officially parted ways with Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, ending a tenure that saw the Portuguese manager revive the club’s fortunes on the pitch while his relationship with ownership deteriorated behind the scenes.

Nuno Espirito Santo position had been in doubt for several weeks, ever since he publicly revealed a breakdown in communication with club owner Evangelos Marinakis. The 51-year-old admitted in August that the dynamic between him and Marinakis had changed, describing it as no longer being “as close” as it once was.

In a late-night statement, Forest confirmed Nuno’s departure and thanked him “for his contribution during a very successful era at the City Ground.” The club added that he “will always hold a special place” in their journey, acknowledging his impact during a transformative period.

Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo was appointed in December 2023 after Steve Cooper was dismissed with the club hovering just above the Premier League relegation zone. Despite inheriting a side low on confidence and facing a four-point deduction for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules, Nuno steadied the ship.

Forest Confirm Exit of Head Coach Nuno Espirito Santo

Forest eventually finished the 2023-24 season in 17th, six points clear of relegation. Nuno won six of his league games during that campaign, including impressive victories over Newcastle United and Manchester United early in his reign.

The 2024-25 season marked an even more dramatic turnaround. Forest finished seventh in the Premier League—their highest league finish since 1994-95—and qualified for European football for the first time in 30 years. Their initial place in the UEFA Europa Conference League was upgraded to the Europa League following Crystal Palace’s disqualification due to multi-club ownership issues.

Under Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, the team notched signature victories against the Premier League elite. They took four points from eventual champions Liverpool, including a famous 1-0 win at Anfield. Forest also completed a league double over Manchester United and defeated Manchester City 1-0 at the City Ground.Nuno Espirito Santo

In cup competition, Nuno Espirito Santo led the club to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, where they were eventually beaten by Manchester City at Wembley.

Nuno’s 73 matches in charge yielded 28 wins, 20 draws, and 25 defeats. His success led to a three-year contract extension signed in June 2025, but internal tensions soon began to mount.

Despite his achievements, the Portuguese manager grew increasingly frustrated with the club’s transfer dealings. Forest spent around £196 million this summer on 13 new signings, but Nuno expressed concern over the pace of integration and squad cohesion.

In several press conferences, Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo made uncharacteristically direct criticisms. He called the club’s transfer window a missed opportunity and implied that leadership was not aligned. His candid remarks surprised many given his typically reserved demeanor.

A key source of tension appeared to be Edu, Forest’s newly appointed global head of football, who now controls much of the club’s recruitment strategy. Reports of a strained relationship between the two further fueled speculation about Nuno’s future.

The situation worsened following a 3-0 home defeat to West Ham United before the September international break—a performance many described as the worst under Nuno. It was also the final nail in what had become an increasingly fragile relationship with Marinakis.

Forest officials denied reports of a confrontation between Nuno and Marinakis last May following a draw against Leicester City. However, such incidents painted a picture of a club battling internal discord despite its rise in performance.

The search for a new head coach is already underway, and former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is among the names being considered. An appointment is expected imminently as the club looks to stabilize ahead of a busy European and domestic schedule.

Although the Portuguese coach leaves with Forest in 10th place in the Premier League, his departure marks the end of a short but impactful era.

In less than two years, Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo transformed a relegation-threatened side into a European contender. His tactical nous, big-game results, and ability to galvanize the squad made him a fan favorite at the City Ground.

However, the collapse in his relationship with Marinakis and structural changes at the club proved insurmountable. Despite signing a long-term deal just months ago, the writing had been on the wall since his pointed remarks about transfers and leadership.

Forest now face the challenge of building on Nuno Espirito Santo’s legacy while navigating the complexities of European competition and domestic expectations.
