SAMA against hard lockdown

The South African Medical Association (SAMA) says calls for a harder lockdown are counter-productive as it won’t achieve meaningful outcomes in the fight against the coronavirus.
The association says focusing on vaccinating healthcare workers and strengthening health facilities is more sensible right now.
“From Sama’s side, we feel that an increase in the lockdown or stricter restrictions will not help us at all and the reason for that or one of the reasons for that is because we are currently in the midst of this pandemic and seeing the numbers rising and they are not rising because people are sitting together, that is part of the reason but it is rising because the virus is extremely contagious,” said Sama’s Angelique Coetzee.
In the last twenty-four hours, 21,980 new infections have been added in South Africa.
This takes the total number of cases to over 1,1 million.
