Poor governance is a key reason for the extent of the water crisis in Hammanskraal according to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Ramaphosa says, combined with a failure to maintain infrastructure, this has made the cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal far worse.
The president says unreliable and poor-quality drinking water has been a problem in Hammanskraal for many years, and the Rooiwal wastewater treatment works has insufficient capacity to deal with the volume of wastewater entering the works.
Ramaphosa says the recent Green Drop Report shows there has been a steady decline in the quality of water and sanitation services in municipalities.
He also pointed fingers at ineffective management, increasing debt and underspending on public infrastructure as reasons for the crisis.
