Well-known SA musician robbed at gun point – Photo

Maskandi artist Busisiwe “Munyu” Mngoma is traumatized following an armed robbery. She was going to Home Affairs offices in Pinetown when a car pulled over next to her.

“It happened in the early hours of the morning, at about 5 am. I was taking my child to Home Affairs to do a birth certificate. I left home early because of the long queues at Home Affairs.

“As I was waiting for a taxi, I saw a car coming in my direction. At first, I thought it’s someone giving me a lift because at that time taxis are scarce in our area,” she said.

But everything changed when one of the passengers pointed a gun at her and demanded her handbag.

“I’m not sure how many of them were inside the car but two of them were sitting in front and one of them was sitting at the back seat.

“The one who was sitting at the back pulled a gun and threatened to shoot me. I quickly handed over my handbag which had my personal belongings, including money and my ID document,” she said.

“About R17 000 was inside the purse. It was money from gigs and I was planning to go and deposit it later in the day. Now it’s gone and I’m traumatized. I also need to go start afresh and apply for an ID book before making a certificate for the child,” she said.

She said she has not opened a case as yet, as she’s still fearful of going outside.

“At the moment I’m back at home and I am scared to do anything. I haven’t opened a case but I will be opening it once I’ve calmed down. I’m actually more angry because I’m not the first person to be robbed at gunpoint like this. As residents of this area we’re aware of this car and we feel helpless,” she said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe said: “We’d like to advise the artist to open a case as soon as possible so that we can start our investigation.”
