Gun Free SA urges govt to act to stop criminals from gaining easy access to firearms

Gun Free South Africa has called on the government to tighten gun legislation after metro police confiscated a firearm that was modified to a fully automatic weapon in Hanover Park on the Cape Flats.

Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said the modified weapon, a Glock pistol with an extended high-capacity magazine, was confiscated during an arrest late on Tuesday night.

Gun Free SA director, Adele Kirsten, said that lawmakers needed to act to stop criminals from gaining easy access to guns.

“The law needs to change [so] that it prohibits the licensing of any semi-automatic weapons to civilians.”

Kirsten said that addressing this issue was urgent.

“If it is not given the priority and the attention it deserves, we are going to go down the road of the kinds of gun violence and gun massacres that we see in America.”
