76-year-old gogo r@ped and grandson killed

A 76-year-old gogo was raped and her grandson (17) was brutally killed in Thabana Tshwana Village, QwaQwa, Free State on Thursday, 1 June.

The perpetrators took advantage of darkness as there was no electricity on that fateful night.

Gogo and her grandson were sleeping in separate bedrooms.

According to the family, gogo woke up to the noises coming from the kitchen with strange voices, and she immediately called her dead grandson, who was asleep in another room.

“The perpetrators who were already in the house allegedly went into the grandson’s bedroom and started assaulting him, while one went into the grandmother’s bedroom, demanding cash,” said a family member.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said the horrific rape incident started when gogo told the suspects she had no money.

Mophiring said the gogo was threatened and told not to make noise while raped.

“The suspects ran away with household electronics and a cellphone,” Mophiring said.

The gogo hid in her bedroom quietly and screamed when she heard people talking outside.

“Neighbours rushed to help, and police were called. When the police and the emergency personnel arrived, the 17-year-old was declared dead at the scene with lacerations on the head,” Mophiring added.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members in the Thabo Mofutsanyana region visited the family on Tuesday, 6 June.

Regional chairman Mohau Molwelwe said the incident was traumatic and painful to the family and the entire community.

The villagers told the publication the unknown men were terrorizing them in the area.

“The perpetrators are armed with guns and other dangerous weapons. We’re fearful for our lives. Innocent people are being killed like animals. We blame cops for being reluctant to make arrests,” said a 48-year-old community member.

Warrant Mophiring said that the police intelligence information led to the arrest of two suspects aged 23 and 20.

He said the suspects were found in a house in the same village with stolen property.

The two appeared in the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrates Court on Monday, 5 June.

They face charges of house robbery, murder, and rape.

The case has been postponed to Tuesday, 13 June.
