Grade 2 pupils at Rathoma Primary School in Mokomeni Village in Botlokwa, Limpopo, were left traumatized after their classmate died in front of them.
The pupils have now been moved from their original classroom to a different one, as social workers were at the school offering psychosocial support.
According to police, Ngoako Kganakga (7) apparently started crying while in the classroom, complaining about stomach pains and a headache.
Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said while the boy’s class teacher went to call the school principal, he started vomiting but only white foam came out his mouth.
“His father Ngoako Mphelo told the police his wife allegedly served their child tea and bread before he went to school and he never ate anything at school since the incident happened before break time.
“We are busy with our investigations to determine the cause of the death,” Mojapelo said.
Family representative Mapula Matshaba-Phala said the school should’ve first called an ambulance before contacting the family.
“By the time they had thought of calling the ambulance, it was already late. What happened here has really shocked us. We still can’t believe he has died,” she said.
Limpopo education MEC Polly Boshielo and social development MEC Nkakareng Rakgoale visited the school on Wednesday, 25 August.
Boshielo said they visited the school to understand what really happened.
“We send our heartfelt condolences to the family. Our department will work hand in hand with the family until the last day when he gets buried,” she said.
Rakgoale said after they learnt of the sad news, a team of social workers was sent to the family and school for psychological support to both the pupils and the family, as they understood this was a difficult time for them.
