Things you probably didn’t about Gomora actor Israel Matseke-Zulu (Don)

Multi-award-winning actor Israel Matseke-Zulu is one of the most celebrated actors from Mzansi.

Matseke-Zulu played the role of Don on Mzansi Magic’s hit series, Gomora before he exited due to ill health.

He recently suffered a huge blow when he lost his leg due to gangrene. Matseke-Zulu had his leg amputated at a Sandton hospital two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, here is a rundown of some of the things you probably didn’t know about him

Israel is a man of many talents, besides being an actor he is a motivational speaker and teaches youngsters around the country about acting, singing, musical performance, and drama as a way to keep them out of trouble.

Matseke-Zulu was once involved in criminal activity which landed him an eight-year jail sentence. However, it was during his time in jail that he formed his own prison theatre group called the Abanqobi Drama Group.

He is South Africa’s most sought-after actor, particularly for his roles as a criminal. Speaking about his gangster roles Matseke-Zulu revealed that he has not yet grown tired of playing the gangster as he believes that those roles provide him with a platform to deliver a message to the masses – hopefully a message that puts viewers, especially young men, off the idea of committing crimes.

Here is a list of some of the gangster roles Matseke-Zulu has played to date:

  • Prison gang boss Boyza in Yizo Yizo The Return
  • Ghetto Professor (aka GP) in Gaz’lam
  • Tsotsi’s father in Tsotsi
  • A gangster called Joburg in Four Corners
  • Gang leader Skroef, in the award-winning iNumber Number
  • The Gusheshe-loving village villain, Mugza, in Hard To Get
  • and Jakes Masilo, the cold, ruthless and dangerous right-hand-man to Z’bondiwe’s super-villain, Killer

While starring in iNumber Number and Z’bondiwe, Matseke-Zulu once doubled up as a script consultant and role developer in both projects.
