The Gauteng Department of Health has condemned an attack on staff members in Mamelodi.
A team from the Stanza Bopape Community Health Centre was conducting household visits on Wednesday when they were approached by two suspects.
The assailants hijacked their State vehicle at gunpoint and robbed the staff members of their belongings — including cell phones and cash.
When police recovered the car hours later, it had already been fitted with fake number plates.
The department’s Motalatale Modiba says counselling has been arranged for those affected.
“The attacks happened at a time when, as a department, we are busy we are busy strengthening our outreach programme to townships, informal settlements, and hostels in what is called the TISH communities – which is meant to improve access to health services, especially in previously disadvantaged areas.”
Moreover, the department is pleading with residents to assist them in their fight to curb the ongoing attacks on health workers.
“If our health workers continue to be attacked when they go to these communities it will, of course, have a dire impact in so far as our programme to take health services to communities,” said Modiba.
