Northern Alliance’s Gary van Niekerk elected new NMB Mayor
Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality has a new mayor.
Gary van Niekerk from the Northern Alliance was elected on Friday after the DA’s Retief Odendaal was ousted through a motion of no confidence.
Van Niekerk is the metro’s third mayor since the November 2021 municipal elections.
He served the metro as its Speaker until he resigned with immediate effect on Friday afternoon.
The ANC’s Eugene Johnson was elected the new Speaker.
The shake-up in the metro’s leadership was orchestrated by a coalition of the ANC, EFF, Patriotic Alliance, and Northern Alliance.
