G-Eazy Says He Wants to Reclaim His Spot At The Top Of The Rap Game

G-Eazy has returned after taking a break from Hip Hop to mourn the loss of his mother, and he’s let it be known that he wants to be better than ever before. Speaking to Something About Rocks for its latest print issue, the “Him & I” rapper discussed his current mindset, and how it’s influencing his professional decisions.

“My intentions are clear,” he told the outlet. ” I want to reclaim the spot that was mine and I’m coming for it with aggressive, direct intention, but you have to balance that with humility and self-awareness as well.”

G-Eazy, who also teased that his new album will be out in “September, October,” also said that his album was a “pull-the-curtain-back type of thing,” and that his true long-term career endgame had a bit more of a noble pursuit.

“I want to put out a truly incredible body of work that gets recognized and received in the right way,” he said. “I’m really excited about this album. It’s so exciting to be having fun again. I love rap. I love getting to make music.”

G-Eazy lost his mother, Suzanne Olmsted, in late 2021 – just two months after dropping his These Things Happen Too album. She was G’s biggest supporter, and the lyricist penned a vulnerable eulogy to commemorate her on Instagram.

“The shock still won’t let me accept the feeling that I’ll never get to hug you in person again,” he wrote. “My queen, my hero, my everything…my mom.”

He followed up this tribute with a single titled “Angel” in 2022, a measured, guitar-laden ballad far different from any of the snappy commercial rap beats on These Things Happen Too. The song wasn’t part of any roll-out – he made it just to celebrate his mother. He followed it with a well-deserved break from music for the rest of the year.

“I’ve just been allowing myself the time I’ve felt I needed to kinda reset and kinda figure out where I wanna go, and allow myself time to grieve,” G-Eazy told HipHopDX in June 2022. “For the better part of the last decade I never really took a break, it was always just going to go, so I think it’s important every now and then to slow down and evaluate what it is you wanna do with intention.”

On the music side of things, G released the first single off his as-of-yet untitled new album, “Tulips & Roses” back in March. On the Gabriels-sampled track, the rapper affirms that he’s back in the game and ready to dominate again.

He also debuted four new songs — “Be My Guest,” “Free Throws,” “Nada” and “Beautiful Surrender” — at a special fan show at The Fonda in Los Angeles in May. It’s unclear for now if they’ll be on his forthcoming album.
