Former deputy Dirco minister Ebrahim Ebrahim dies

Tributes are pouring in for former Deputy International Relations Minister, Ebrahim Ebrahim. The 84-year-old’s death was announced on Monday. GCIS DG Phumla Williams lauded him for mentoring her as a young underground activist. Ebrahim joined the liberation movement as a youth activist in 1952.

He took part in the Congress of the People in Kliptown, which led to the adoption of the Freedom Charter.
In 1963, he was arrested and was sentenced to 15 years on Robben Island.

During the Codesa negotiations, he was tasked with establishing the Patriotic Front, bringing 93 organisations together.
