Foreign-owned spaza shops on Cape Flats feel threatened

Small business owners in Cape Town are adapting to the changing conditions under the national lockdown. Some foreign-owned store owners on the Cape Flats said they feel threatened, while some community members have raised concerns that they are not compliant with regulations and are selling banned products like cigarettes.

eNCA spoke to one shop owner who vehemently denied the sale of non-essential goods. He related how police facilitated obtaining a valid essential services permit to allow him to continue trading.

Ward councillor Angus McKenzie said. “these shops play a very critical role within our communities. McKenzie explained some areas in Cape Town don’t have large, local supermarkets and are reliant on spaza shops for essential goods. The difficulties under lockdown include facilitating social distancing in smaller retailers, he said, and reported most traders are complying with regulations.

McKenzie said one of the biggest challenges to compliance is that the rules are frequently changed, making them difficult to explain and implement.
