Foreign national arrested after R1 million drugs seized in Cape Town! A 42-year-old foreign national has been arrested and is expected to appear in the Parow Magistrate’s Court after being found in possession of Mandrax worth approximately R1 million.
The arrest took place on Tuesday morning as part of an ongoing anti-drug initiative led by the Western Cape Police Department’s Anti-Economical and Extortion Task Team.
Multi-Disciplinary Operation Leads to Major Drug Bust
The operation was carried out by a specialized task team, whose mission is to tackle the illegal drug trade and extortion activities in the Western Cape.
According to Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, spokesperson for the Western Cape police, the team’s diligence and commitment to disrupting drug trafficking operations were instrumental in the success of this recent bust.
“Due to the perseverance of the police members, they responded to information regarding a possible distribution point for drugs,” said Swartbooi.
“In the early hours of Tuesday, October 29, 2024, a multi-disciplinary team responded to intelligence-driven information and approached a residence in Parow.”
Discovery of Mandrax with High Street Value
Upon receiving intelligence about drug distribution, officers approached the specified location in Parow. After gaining access to the residence, the team conducted a thorough search that ultimately led to the discovery of a large quantity of Mandrax, an illegal and highly addictive drug. Police estimated the consignment’s street value to be around R1 million.
The suspect, a 42-year-old foreign national, was subsequently taken into custody on suspicion of dealing in drugs. This operation highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-based policing methods, which have proven crucial in intercepting drugs before they reach the streets.
Anti-Drug Task Team on High Alert
The Anti-Economical and Extortion Task Team has remained vigilant, continuing to respond proactively to information related to drug trafficking in the Western Cape. Swartbooi emphasized that the team is committed to dismantling criminal networks involved in the drug trade.
This high-value drug seizure marks the second significant arrest within two days by the task team. According to Swartbooi, the team’s approach centers on conducting multi-disciplinary, intelligence-led operations designed to disrupt the flow of narcotics in the region.

Separate Incident: Another Drug Seizure on N1 Toll Plaza
In another operation earlier this week, the same team seized a consignment of methamphetamine (known locally as “tik”) with an estimated street value of R50,000. This arrest took place on Sunday, October 27, when officers acted on intelligence indicating that a delivery vehicle traveling between Johannesburg and Cape Town was being used to transport drugs.
The team intercepted the vehicle at the N1 Toll Plaza in Paarl at approximately 2 p.m., halting it and conducting a search. During the search, officers discovered a hidden stash of methamphetamine inside the vehicle.
Arrest of the Suspect at Paarl Toll Plaza
The driver of the vehicle, a 46-year-old Zimbabwean national, was detained on the scene. The discovery and seizure of drugs further underscored the effectiveness of the intelligence-based strategy employed by the task team.
Swartbooi confirmed that the suspect would face charges of drug trafficking and is expected to appear in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.
These recent arrests are seen as a strong statement by law enforcement that the Western Cape police are intent on eliminating the drug trade from their jurisdiction.
The Broader Impact of Law Enforcement Operations
The successful interception of both Mandrax and methamphetamine highlights the growing problem of drug trafficking networks that operate across provinces and even international borders.
Both the Western Cape police and the Anti-Economical and Extortion Task Team remain steadfast in their commitment to intercept these illegal shipments and curb the distribution of narcotics in communities. By working closely with intelligence units and responding swiftly to leads, the task team hopes to dismantle drug trafficking rings that fuel crime and addiction in the Western Cape.
Upcoming Court Proceedings
With both suspects now detained, they will face charges related to drug trafficking. Their upcoming appearances in court are expected to draw significant attention as they may reveal more about the methods and networks behind these large-scale drug operations.
The recent arrests serve as a reminder of the severe consequences of engaging in drug trafficking and underscore law enforcement’s determination to hold those involved accountable.
The Western Cape police have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding communities by continuing to pursue intelligence-driven operations and collaborating with multiple agencies to reduce drug-related crime in the region.
