Family & friends plead for #FMF activist’s release

Fees Must Fall activist Kanya Cekeshe will be heading home soon. The Department of Justice and Correctional services says processes are underway to finalize his parole. He will be released alongside others who qualify for a remission of sentences decreed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Abathembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo has already been released under that process.

Cekeshe was sentenced to eight years behind bars, with three years suspended for his involvement in the protest action.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to public violence and malicious damage to property after setting a police vehicle alight during the height of the protests in 2016.

It’s been a psychological battle for Cekeshe’s family.

Cekeshe’s legal team says his right to a fair trial was severely violated.
