The Western Cape government says it wants to put its money where its mouth is when it comes to dealing with crime.
Western Cape authorities have welcomed newly-recruited LEAP (Law Enforcement Advancement Plan) officers who will be deployed to Bishop Lavis.
MEC for Community Safety in the province, Reagan Allen, says these recruits will be giving young people hope.
“Criminals in various communities have taken hold of our communities. Criminals and gangsters have adopted the spirit in which our constitution was drafted,” he said.
“You are adding to our communities, you are adding value. You are giving young people hope.”
Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the province will be stepping up efforts in the coming weeks to assist police officers in dealing with crime.
The mayor says the police service is under-resourced.
“We’ll keep pushing for more policing powers,” he said.
“We can now tackle drug, gun and gang-related crimes.”
